A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
