New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
