The Compassion of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately informed my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
